Your best, as life changes.

The kit may still be familiar. The reason you want to use it can be different.

Perhaps you used to train for an event. Perhaps the gym was where you caught up with friends. Now you find yourself thinking about an afternoon exploring somewhere new, a favourite swim, or simply having a session you enjoy again.

When you picture getting back to your best, which part of that picture belongs to your life now?

You can bring your experience with you and still choose a different destination. These three questions offer somewhere to start that conversation with yourself.

What would you like to enjoy doing?

Think of a moment you would look forward to. The walk with a view you have missed. A game with people you like. The familiar feeling of getting absorbed in a session.

It can be an ordinary thing. There is no application form for having a personal reason to move.

An event or a training target can still be something you genuinely want. You might also find that the thing drawing you back is the activity itself: being out on the bike, spending time in the water, or having that space in your day.

Let the picture be specific enough to mean something to you. What is happening? What do you enjoy about it? Who, if anyone, would you like to share it with?

This is a way to name a wish. Deciding what training suits it is a separate conversation.

What has changed around it?

Your old routine belonged to a particular version of your week. You may have a different journey to work now, different people to care for, or different ways you want to spend your free time.

Perhaps your favourite place to train has changed. Perhaps the people who made a session enjoyable have moved away. Perhaps you have found something else you are curious about.

Those details can belong in the picture alongside your training experience. An early session you once loved may hold a different appeal when your mornings look different. A shared activity may matter more now than the event you used to prepare for.

Ask what you would want to carry forward and what you would choose differently. You can respect what mattered to you then while making room for what matters now.

What do you still enjoy about a familiar practice?

There may be something you recognise straight away: the rhythm of rowing, the concentration of climbing, or the conversations before a session starts.

That detail can give your idea of returning some shape. You might want the same activity with a different purpose. You might be curious about another activity that offers something you enjoy.

If you already work with a coach or follow a plan, bring that personal reason into the conversation. “I would like to enjoy this part of my life again” gives you something concrete to discuss alongside any existing training goals.

These questions do not choose exercises or a programme for you. They help describe what you want those choices to be about.

A picture that is yours

You do not have to settle your whole future to recognise one thing you would like to return to.

It might be a familiar activity, a place, some company, or time you want for yourself. Your idea of your best can include the life you have now.
